Transforming Your RV Interior Part 1: Reimagining Cabinets and Walls for an RV Remodel Fresh Look

As an enthusiastic RV camper, I understand how vital it is to create a cozy and inviting space in your home on wheels. The interior of an RV can often feel cramped and outdated. However, with a bit of creativity and effort, you can transform it into a stylish and functional haven. In this first part of a five-part series, I share my journey of redesigning my RV interior, focusing on modifying cabinets, painting walls, and adding a backsplash to the kitchen area. Let’s dive in!

The Vision for My RV Remodel

Before getting into the details of the remodel, I took time to picture and draw a plan of my ideal RV space. I wanted an area that felt open, bright, and welcoming. My goal was to create a modern yet cozy atmosphere that would enhance my camping trips plus give me a homey atmosphere for my permanent RV campground lot.

I gathered inspiration from various sources like Pinterest and home decor blogs. I was particularly drawn to light colors, natural materials, and a hint of rustic charm. With this clear vision, I felt ready to tackle my RV remodel.

Modifying Cabinets for a Fresh Look

The cabinets were an area I knew needed a significant change. The original dark wood finish felt heavy, making the space seem smaller. I decided to lighten things up by painting them a soft white color.

Preparing the Cabinets

I began by removing all cabinet doors and hardware. This step is crucial for achieving a professional-looking finish. I thoroughly cleaned the surfaces to ensure that the paint would adhere properly.

Choosing the Right Paint

I chose a high-quality, semi-gloss paint (satin also works) that could withstand the wear and tear of RV life. Opting for bright white helped reflect light, creating an airy feel. After applying a primer, I painted two coats of the white paint, allowing at least two hours of drying time between coats. This can help ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Adding New Hardware

To complete the cabinet transformation, I replaced the old hardware with modern brushed nickel handles. This small but impactful change gave the cabinets a sleek, updated look. Installing new hardware handles can elevate the overall design and offer a touch of personal style.

Painting the Walls for a Bright Atmosphere

With the cabinets looking fresh, it was time to tackle the walls. The original dull beige color did little to enhance the space. I aimed to create a bright and cheerful environment, selecting a soft light blue that would beautifully complement the white cabinets.

Preparing the Walls

Similar to the cabinets, I removed wall decor and cleaned the surfaces. I filled in any holes or imperfections with spackle, then sanded them down for a smooth finish. This step is essential for ensuring an even coat of paint.

Choosing the Right Paint

I chose a washable satin finish paint for the walls, as spills and stains can happen in an RV. After applying a primer, I painted two coats of the blue, ensuring even coverage. Research shows that lighter colors can make spaces feel larger—up to 20% more spacious according to some interior design studies. If wallpaper is your style, I suggest using peel-n-stick wallpaper. It comes in numerous designs and colors, but I'd only use it for an accent wall.

Adding a Backsplash to the Kitchen Area

With the cabinets and walls transformed, the next step was to add a backsplash in the kitchen. A backsplash not only enhances visual interest but also protects the walls from splashes and stains.

Choosing the Right Material

I opted for peel-and-stick tiles for the backsplash. They are easy to install and come in various designs. I chose a classic white subway tile pattern that not only complemented the aesthetic but also offered a timeless appeal. Many homeowners report that a backsplash can increase home value by 3-7%, making it a smart investment.

Installing the Backsplash

To install the backsplash, I measured the area and cut the tiles to fit. I peeled off the backing and pressed them onto the wall, ensuring they were level and aligned. This project was surprisingly quick, taking only about an hour, and I loved how it instantly elevated the kitchen area's appearance.
