Deciding on Your RV Cleaning Managment Strategy
Whether you live in a house or a camper, there are two times a year when you want to deep clean. Those times are spring and fall. November is a good time to get cracking on that fall RV cleaning, as it's starting to cool down in Florida. You can open windows and make sorting so much easier, plus you can spray or bomb for those pests that have tried to take over.
Start your deep RV cleaning in one area, the kitchen, bedroom, or living room, is a great way to stay organized and in control. I start in the bedroom because when I've reached the kitchen, the last room on my list, I know every room has been thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom. I am less apt to say I'm tired and give up. This method ensures that no room is left untouched and you can see your progress as you move from one area to the next.
Vents, Windows, Ceilings, and walls
Whatever room you start in, clean and sterilize the vents and windows. Next, tackle the cabinets and drawers. Sort into 3 piles – keep, donate/sell, toss. Then wipe out the insides, clean the outsides, and put things away. Third, wash down your walls using a mild detergent. Start with the ceiling and work your way down, rinsing your cloth often to avoid noticeable streaks. A good solution to use is white cleaning vinegar and water. If it's really dirty, you might want to use isopropyl. Alcohol after wiping it down to make sure it's completely clean and sanitized.
*Beware—do not mix vinegar with an ammonia-based product containing bleach. It will create a dangerous chemical reaction.
Cleaning and Sanitizing the Refrigerator
Keeping your refrigerator clean and mold-free around the seals is extremely important. The best way to clean is to turn off the unit and leave the doors open for long enough to defrost. You can use a blow dryer to speed up the defrost time. Once the unit is defrosted, use a solution of warm water and baking soda to wipe down the inside surfaces. Then go over it again with a mild detergent and white vinegar to sanitize, then rinse with just water.
If smells are still an issue, you could try a mix of baking soda, white vinegar, and water and leave the doors open to air it out. An open box of baking soda in your refrigerator will help eliminate those nasty smells.
Don't forget to clean the fridge seals, as they can collect dirt and grow black mold. This often-overlooked area is crucial for maintaining a clean and healthy living space in your camper. By paying attention to these details, you can ensure that your fridge remains in top condition and your food stays fresh.
The Kitchen and Bathroom Deep RV Cleaning
After you've cleaned the cabinets, drawers, ceiling, and windows:
Scrub your sinks, shower, and toilet inside and out, getting into all those cracks and crevices with small brushes. For chemical-free sanitation, you could use a hand-held steam cleaner throughout your camper.
If your surfaces are likely to scratch, consider using a mix of water, white vinegar, and a mild, non-toxic detergent.
Wipe dry after cleaning to erase any streaks.
The Final Step – Vacuuming
In your fall deep clean, tackle the entire couch, chairs, and mattress. Make sure you get underneath, and if the furniture needs upholstery cleaning, be sure to do that, too. Another place that's often missed is around the edge of the rooms. If you have slide-outs, you don't want any dirt or other debris, possibly jamming your slides when bringing them in, so make sure your floors are kept free of sand or dirt.
Keeping Your RV Clean Until Spring Clean
Establishing a maintenance routine is key to keeping your RV clean and fresh-smelling all year. By using various non-toxic cleaners, fresheners, and a dehumidifier, you can ensure a pleasant living environment. Remember, if you get a mess or spill, clean it up right away. Proactive cleaning prevents the buildup of dirt and makes the task more manageable. Make sure to sweep or vacuum daily. If you notice clutter is building up, start sorting into your three piles – keep, donate, throw. By staying on top of your cleaning, you'll maintain a visually pleasing camper and make the next deep clean much easier.
Good luck with your fall RV cleaning. You'll feel like you've accomplished something great!
